Pet's Name: Big Tom
Breed: Off The Track Thoroughbred
Age: 11
Pet's Coloring: Chestnut
Biography: Commodore T aka Big Tom was born 1/26/98 on a thoroughbred farm in Yellow Springs, Oh. He was the first horse former owner Tom McCann had foaled, thus he was nick named after this great man. Big Tom went on to race a couple of years at Beulah Park under his racing name Commodore T. He won a couple races and even set a track record, but racing was not for him. The McCann's noticed Big Tom had one speed, it is either the speed that would win the race or the speed that would lose the race.
After awhile off the McCann decided that Big Tom would be adopted out through New Vocations, a horse rescue specializing in ex-racehorses. This is where I meet Big Tom and adopted him on 7/27/07. He was my 28th birthday present. I purchased him with saving bonds my grandparents had left me and although I had been riding horses my whole life this was truly my first horse. In 2008 I took him to the New Vocations Charity Show (his first horse show ever) -he won two ribbons. I never realized how big of a show this was and the day it was apparent Big Tom was the only barefoot horse from the field. Big Tom showed like a pro though and our success brought tears to my eyes. In 2009 we spent the summer trail riding and playing in the arena. Big Tom will let me crawl under him, hang from his neck and even slide off his rump. I can even ride him bareback with only a halter on. In the last 2 years he has become more then just a horse to me - he is my best friend!
Pet's Name: Squishy
Breed: Labrador Retriever
Age: 6 years
Pet's Coloring: yellow

Biography: Squishy was adopted from Pilot dogs inc. He didn't make the cut to be a guide dog and needed a career change. So I took him home and I'm very glad I did. He has one of the most laid back personalities of any dog I've ever met.
Biography: My active, intelligent border collie, Brynna, went blind with retinal atrophy at age 5. It was followed by severe cataracts which stole what remained of her eyesight.
The first indication of her waning vision was coming down the dark stairs in our old farmhouse. She stopped wanting to go upstairs at night. It was too frightening trying to make her way down the dark stairs. Then, she had trouble herding. She couldn't find the cows that weren't moving. I'd sent her out, over and over. She got the cows she could hear, but not the ones who stood quietly watching her curiously.
Finally, one day we slept out down in the valley. In the morning, she was off sniffing. I called and headed up to the house. It was several hours later that I realized she hadn't followed. I went back to search. There she was, sitting next to our tent, waiting. I led her home and she ran into the farm gate.
The ophthalmologist diagnosed retinal atrophy. There was nothing that could be done. Brynna was going blind.
At first, she could still detect motion. She could still play her favorite game of fetch, even if she could no longer herd cows or horses. By age 7, cataracts led to complete blindness.
But by then, we had worked out verbal commands to help her in playing fetch! On every walk, Brynna finds twigs, branches, apples, even logs to proudly bring to me so that we can play Fetch!
